San Marino Unified School District’s governing board unanimously green lighted Superintendent Alex Cherniss on Tuesday evening to begin formal negotiations with the city for the district’s possible purchase of the San Marino Center where they hope to build the first gymnasium in the history of Huntington Middle School.
San Marino School Board member Nam Jack has been named one of fourteen San Gabriel Valley residents who will receive the 2015 Women of Distinction award from Rep. Judy Chu at a ceremony to be held at the San Marino Center on Saturday, April 18 at 10:00 a.m.
Current San Marino School Board President Lisa Link and three-term Board Member Chris Norgaard told The Tribune this week that they will defend their seats at the Tuesday, November 3 election. The seats of Mrs. Link and Mr. Norgaard are the only two that will be contested this year as Nam Jack, Joseph Chang and Shelley Ryan have two years remaining on their current terms.
The San Marino Unified School District is exploring the possibility of purchasing from the city the San Marino Center and will discuss further options at their Tuesday, April 14 meeting at the district office.

San Marino Superintendent Alex Cherniss on Tuesday evening revealed a comprehensive mid-year assessment that highlighted three major topics for the 2014-15 school year and beyond.
The San Marino Unified School District’s Measure E – a special six-year, $865 per parcel tax vital to the business-as- usual function of California’s highest-rated unified school district – passed on Tuesday with 76.25 percent of the 2,628votes cast in assent. The parcel tax required a 2/3rds plus one majority vote for approval.
A lifelong motto of ‘children first’ and a belief that “equal opportunity in learning is the basic foundation for a child’s journey through education” has come full circle, and last week, long-time San Marino volunteer Stephanie Duncan received the Golden Apple Award at a ceremony sponsored by the Northwest San Gabriel Valley Administrators Association.
