The Sophie Miller Foundation has been launched with an official announcement celebration, held at Pasadena's Tournament House in April.
Hundreds of friends, residents and families turned out for the art exhibition, "Artists in Residence," featuring artworks by seniors living at Episcopal Home Communities' three campuses: Scripps Kensington in Alhambra, The Canterbury in Rancho Palos Verdes, and The Covington in Aliso Viejo. Thirty six pieces of exceptional art by residents reflected the inspiration, optimism and fulfillment of older residents. Several of the artists were present to share their pieces with the foundation trustees, officers and friends of the organization. Dorothy Hetrick, an 11 year resident at the Canterbury, had her 100th birthday on April 27. Partially paralyzed on her left side, she is able to paint with her right hand, which she does every week -beautifully."
The Sophie Miller Foundation is a charitable organization, which supports The Episcopal Home Communities and is dedicated to subsidizing charitable care for older adults and funding innovative programs that elevate the quality of life for seniors in Southern California. The Foundation raises and oversees funds that enable seniors, who cannot afford to pay the full cost of their care and services, to enjoy comfort and security at The Episcopal Home Communities' retirement communities
The Foundation honors the commitment of an extraordinary woman, Sophie Miller, who was struck by the plight of the elderly poor while doing missionary work in the neighborhoods of Los Angeles in the early 1900s. Vowing to provide a comfortable and secure place for them to live, she realized her lifelong dream in 1923 when The Home for the Aged, the first Episcopal Home, opened in Alhambra. The Foundation supports the ideals that she championed.
The mission of The Sophie Miller Foundation is to support vibrant community for seniors through benevolence and innovation. As a supporting organization of The Episcopal Home Communities, the foundation will devote its energy and passion to raising funds that subsidize care and services for our residents in need. We will continue to promote the Benevolence Fund and the Employee Education Fund at each community. In addition, we will support The Episcopal Home Communities as it develops innovative programs that extend outside the walls and reach older adults in the broader community.
