San Gabriel High School Tuesday held an awards ceremony, banquet style, for its distinguished students of its Medical Careers Academy. Teachers Amy Wu and Ana Sales-Gonzales handed out awards for leadership, inspiration, academics, attendance and more.
Food in the form of fruits, pastries and cake was provided for the students, who took time out of their hectic schedules to be part of the event. Wu is the coordinator of the academy.
The winners were Carlos Purser, leadership; Heather Ponce, inspiration; Mered Rivera, most improved; Yolanda Ziragos, improvement; Antonio Gutierrez, best biology performer; Davina Dominguez, and Tina Zhao and Janet Dang, both for perfect attendance.
Wu said, “We’re proud of you for your achievements, you went above and beyond what was expected.” She encouraged the students to continue their excellence for the next year. All of the students in the medical academy will be juniors next year.

With 43 graduates, Del Mar High School graduated its largest class in school history on June 10, 2010.
The class included two students graduating at the end of their junior year, and an additional three students who were fifth year seniors. Among the class were eleven scholarship recipients and eight award winners. 81% (35 of 43) of the class of 2010 is registered for college and an additional two students are headed toward the military.
