• MTA Bus Operator Honored for Heroism

LOS ANGELES COUNTY — At the Board of Supervisors meeting on July 8, Supervisor Michael D. Antonovich honored MTA bus operator Rafael Melgar, for saving the life of an MTA customer.

“On April 22, 2014, while driving his bus through the Chatsworth Train Station, Rafael saw Dina Garcia struggling to free her wheelchair from the Metrolink tracks as a train was approaching,” said Antonovich. “Rafael acted instinctively — stopping his bus and running to assist Dina.  Had he not acted, Dina would have been struck and killed by the train.”

Rafael completed his route without telling anyone what he had done.  It was only after Dina tried to identify the operator to express her thanks did METRO officials learn about the incident.
