• San Marino’s Heroes Acknowledged On Veteran’s Day

    by Mitch Lehman

“I am finally proud to say that I have served my country,” a well-dressed man said, his military cap properly tilted to the right, a medal pinned to the breast of his navy blue blazer. “I haven’t worn the color green for thirty years. I remember when we would come back to the United States. When the plane landed, we would run into the bathroom of the airport to change out of our uniforms. We were ashamed to be a part of the United States Armed Services.”

Not an uncommon tale for the Vietnam War vet, one of hundreds that were told on Monday around San Marino’s War Memorial, where this all-Veteran photo was taken on a day set aside to acknowledge those who served our country.

Almost a hundred residents have participated in VIP – the Veteran Identification Project – which seeks to film, photograph and archive all of San Marino’s war vets.  Among those pictured are those who have participated in the project, including Donald M. Cook, Dick Ward, Rick Caldwell, George J. Azadian, William Lepicier, Robert Drew, Robert Almanza, Wendy Glazier, Alan Steinbrecher, Gene Weisenberg, Marty Marteney, Tom Santley, Lyman Newton, Bruce McGregor, Richard Peters, John Lucas, John Morris, Richard Berklite, Elliott Katz, Richard Fuentes, Chris Christensen, Tom Millar, Joe Edwards, Dr. Milkie, Charles Miller, Steve Donker, Vincent Tricarico, Dr. Robert Palmer, Keith McDonald, Dick Kalk, Bruce K.
