• Los Angeles County 4th of July Parades Will Have Diverse Themes

LOS ANGELES (CNS) – Parades marking the Fourth of July are planned throughout Los Angeles County Thursday, with themes including environmentalism, “Waves of Freedom” and “Who’s your hero?”

Westchester’s 14th annual Fourth of July Parade will have the theme, “Red, White and Blue… Goes Green!” and focus on ways to reduce waste and think sustainably. The parade is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m. at the intersection of Loyola Boulevard and Manchester Avenue and travel north to Loyola Marymount University.

The parade is being limited to 50 entries following “a great deal of community feedback” about last year’s parade, which had more than 65, according to the LAX Coastal Area of Chamber of Commerce, which organizes the event.

Actor Ed Asner, 83, will be the grand marshal of the 65th annual Pacific Palisades Fourth of July Parade, which is set to begin at 2 p.m. Thursday on Sunset Boulevard, between Via de la Paz and Drummond Street.

Its theme is “Waves of Freedom,” representing the waves of the Pacific Ocean off Pacific Palisades and the waving of the American flag, according to organizers.

Santa Monica’s seventh annual Fourth of July parade will begin at 9:30 a.m. at Main Street and Pico Boulevard and will attempt to answer the question, “Who’s your hero?”

San Gabriel’s 4th of July Parade will begin at 9:30 a.m. at Plaza Park, in front of the San Gabriel Mission, then head north on Mission Drive and east on Broadway in the city’s Mission District and conclude at Smith Park. Awards will be presented for best decorated bicycle, scooter, tricycle or wagon; most patriotic attire; and most patriotic banner.

The Valley Village Homeowners Association Fourth of July Parade will begin at Colfax Elementary School at 10 a.m. and conclude at Valley Village Park, where the association will provide corn dogs, watermelon, cold drinks and cupcakes.

The parade is billed as a “red, white and blue celebration” where residents are encouraged to create their own floats and displays.

The 10th annual Great American Kids’ Bike Parade will begin at 10 a.m. at 1 Granada Ave. on the beach bike path in Long Beach.

Sierra Madre’s 4th of July Parade will include children on decorated bicycles, classic cars and the band from The Gooden School. The 1.3-mile, two- hour parade will begin at 10 a.m. at the corner of Sierra Madre Boulevard and Sunnyside Avenue, and travel the length of Sierra Madre Boulevard to Sierra Vista Park.

The Sunland-Tujunga Independence Day parade is set to begin at 10 a.m. at Foothill Boulevard and Mt. Gleason Avenue, head west along Foothill Boulevard and end at Sunland Park.

South Pasadena’s 31st annual Fourth of July Parade will have the theme “Happy 125th Birthday, South Pasadena.” Opening ceremonies will begin at 10:30 a.m. at the South Pasadena Library, with the parade starting at 11 a.m.
