• Son of L.A. County Fire Captain Killed in Arizona Wildfire


    LOS ANGELES (CNS) – One of the 19 firefighters killed while battling a wildfire in Arizona was the son of a Los Angeles County Fire Department captain, authorities said today.

    Kevin Woyjeck, 21, was the son of county fire Capt. Joe Woyjeck, said Los Angeles County fire Inspector Tony Aikens.

    The 19 firefighters were with the Granite Mountain Interagency Hotshot Crew, an elite wildland firefighting unit. They died near Yarnell, Ariz., on Sunday afternoon in the worst wildland firefighting loss in the U.S. since the 1933 Griffith Park Fire in Los Angeles, where 29 firefighters were killed.

    So far, 2,000 acres have burned in Arizona’s so-called Yarnell Hill fire, which has not been contained.
