• 13-Year-Old Fatally Injured by School Bus is Identified

GLENDALE (CNS) – Authorities today identified a 13-year-old boy who was fatally injured when hit by a school bus as he rode a bicycle in Glendale.

Jonathan Hernandez of Glendale died at a hospital about an hour after the accident, which happened shortly after 2 p.m. Thursday at Columbus Avenue and Riverdale Drive, coroner’s Assistant Chief Ed Winter said.

Hernandez was a student at Roosevelt Middle School, and counselors were at the campus today, Glendale police Sgt. Tom Lorenz said.

According to the preliminary investigation, the boy was riding his bicycle west on the south sidewalk of Riverdale Drive without a helmet “when he entered the intersection at Columbus without yielding,” Lorenz said.

“At that very moment, the private school bus, operated by First Student, entered the intersection traveling north when the collision occurred,” Lorenz said. “At the time of the collision, there were no children on the bus. There was no indication of impairment on the part of the driver.”

The driver, 58-year-old Barbara Calderon of Pasadena, was taken to a hospital for evaluation, Lorenz said.
