• IMAX Helps ‘Jurassic Park 3D’ to Win Big at Box Office

LOS ANGELES (CNS) – A 20-year old blockbuster that is being re-released in 3D is the big story at the nation’s box offices this weekend, according to today’s studio estimates.

“Jurassic Park 3-D” premiered in fourth place, with $18.3 million in ticket sales. About 32 percent of that was from IMAX theaters, according to industry analyst Paul Dergarabedian.

“This is the highest percentage of business that IMAX ever generated on a Hollywood title, excluding exclusive runs,” he said.

In first place was “Evil Dead, which debuted with $26 million in sales. “The Croods,” in its third week of exhibition, was in second place with a $21 million weekend and $125.8 running gross.

“G.I.Joe: Retaliation” had a $21.1 million weekend and has grossed $86.7 million in two weeks. Globally, the action flick has taken in $231.8 million.

After “Jurassic Park 3-D, rounding out the 10 most-popular movies this week, as estimated by the studios, were “Olympus Has Fallen” ($10 million), “Tyler Perry’s Temptation” ($10 million),  “Oz The Great And Powerful” ($8.1 million), “The Host” ($5.2 million), “The Call” ($3.5 million) and “Admission” ($2 million).
