• Woman Suing Estate of Jenni Rivera Gets More Time

LOS ANGELES (CNS) – A judge has given lawyers for a woman suing the estate of Jenni Rivera more time to also serve the bodyguard who allegedly injured the plaintiff after a concert nearly four years ago in Riverside County.

Mayra Pineda-Garcia alleges she suffered a broken leg from being pushed by the late singer’s bodyguard, Jesse Contreras, after the Oct. 30, 2009, event at the Morongo Casino Resort & Spa in Cabazon.

On Tuesday, Los Angeles Superior Court Judge David Minning scheduled another hearing for April 19 for an update on the attempt to locate and serve Contreras. This was the second time Minning had given the plaintiff’s lawyers more time to present Contreras with a copy of the complaint and a summons.

On Dec. 12, Minning reinstated Pineda-Garcia’s complaint, reversing his June 19 decision to dismiss the case. He said he tossed the complaint at that time because Contreras had not been served.     Pineda-Garcia filed her suit in October 2011 and is seeking damages of more than $16,700. Her complaint alleges she was in a line to meet Rivera after the concert when Contreras pushed her, causing her to fall over wires and break one of her legs. Pineda says she paid extra to have her photo taken with Rivera.

Pineda-Garcia’s attorneys have amended their client’s will to name Rivera’s estate as the primary defendant following the singer’s Dec. 9 death in a plane crash in Mexico.

Rivera’s estate has filed a cross-complaint against concert promoter Gabriel Vasquez. The estate’s attorney, Anthony Lopez, said Vasquez booked Rivera for the concert and hired the security staff to protect her. The cross- complaint asks that Rivera’s estate be reimbursed in part for any judgment against it.
