• Remembering Lincoln in Los Angeles

LOS ANGELES (CNS) – The 21st annual Abraham Lincoln Remembrance will be held today at the Los Angeles National Cemetery in Westwood, featuring the reciting of the Gettysburg Address by attorney Jack Girardi.

The program on the 204th anniversary of the birth of the 16th president will be held from noon-2 p.m. and include performances of songs that Lincoln admired, organizer Duke Russell said. Students from Lincoln and Birmingham high schools will participate in the program. Admission is free.

More information is available be contacting Russell at (323) 459-3998 or by email at Duke.Russell@sbcglobal.net.

“It’s a beautiful tribute,” Russell said. “We encourage all to attend, particularly students and teachers, to be reminded how Lincoln used reading to rise out of poverty and accomplish great things.”

People attending the event will also learn “what an elected (official) can and should do to serve the people,” Russell told City News Service.

Russell, a retired television lighting technician, began the annual Lincoln remembrance in 1993 when, after learning there was no celebration planned in Los Angeles for Lincoln’s birthday, he went to the Hollywood Bowl and delivered the Gettysburg Address in front of his daughter, Los Angeles Times columnist Jack Smith and an otherwise empty facility.

The remembrance has been held at the Los Angeles National Cemetery since 1994. Actors Charlton Heston, Hal Holbrook, Mickey Rooney and Michael York, comedian Steve Allen and author Ray Bradbury have been among those reciting the Gettysburg Address.
