LOS ANGELES (CNS) – “Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters” was the most- popular movie this weekend in North America, but its projected sales were a modest $19 million.
Studio projections gathered by Hollywood.com Box Office indicate the contemporary take on the the old fairy tale did particularly well on IMAX screens.
“Mama” was projected to take second place, with a $12.9 million weekend and a total of $48.6 million in sales over two weeks.
And “Silver Linings Playbook” was in third place, as word-of-mouth generates increased pre-Oscar sales. It was on track for a $10 million weekend, and $69.5 million in sales over 12 weeks.
Rounding out the 10 most-popular films in the U.S. and Canada this weekend, as estimated by the studios and collated by Hollywood.com, were “Zero Dark Thirty” ($9.8 million), “Parker” (debuting with $7 million), “Django Unchained” and the debuting “Movie 43″ (tied with $5 million), “Gangster Squad” ($4.2 million), “Broken City” ($4 million) and “Les Miserables” ($3.9 million).
