• “Taken 2″ With Liam Neeson On Track For $50 Million Opening Weekend

LOS ANGELES (CNS) – A new thriller starring Liam Neeson gained a “massive first day take” of $18.6 million, and is on track to give Hollywood a second straight weekend of good box office results, an industry analyst said today.

“Taken 2″ is on track for a $50 million opening weekend, according to Fox studios estimates reported to Hollywood.com’s industry watcher, Paul Dergerabedian. “That’s almost double the debut weekend of 2009′s ‘Taken,’ which opened with $24.7 million,” he said.

“Hotel Transylvania” appeared to be having a good second weekend, with a “scarily-strong gross of $23 million to $25 million expected for the weekend, and a total through Sunday in the low- to mid-$70 million range,” Degerabedian said.

“Pitch Perfect” went into expanded release, and was in third place with a a $4.9 million Friday showing, good enough for a weekend receipt of near $15 million, Degerabedian said. “Looper” is on fourth, and the new Tim Burton feature, “Frankenweenie,” opened Friday with about $3.7 million in sales.
