LOS ANGELES (CNS) – The latest installment of the “Resident Evil” film series overpowered an animated re-release to debut atop the North American box office, according to final figures released today.
“Resident Evil: Retribution,” the fifth film in the series, opened with $21.1 million to finish in the top spot, easily besting the 3-D re-release of “Finding Nemo,” which earned $16.7 million, according to Hollywood.com Box Office.
The horror flick “The Possession” slipped from first to third place, earning $5.8 million between Friday and Sunday. The prohibition-era drama “Lawless” fell to fourth with $4.3 million, while “The Expendables 2″ earned another $3.1 million to take fifth.
Rounding out the top 10 films of the weekend were “ParaNorman” ($3.1 million); “The Words” ($2.9 million); “The Bourne Legacy” ($2.8 million); “The Odd Life of Timothy Green” ($2.6 million); and “The Campaign” ($2.4 million).
