LOS ANGELES (CNS) – A possible murder suspect was shot by police near downtown Los Angeles today after leading them on a chase in a stolen car for more than one hour.
The chase ended at Bixel and Seventh streets about 7:15 p.m., with the suspect apparently being shot after a collision. The suspect survived the shooting, police said.
The car was initially spotted at Sunset Boulevard and Rosemont Avenue in Echo Park about 6 p.m. by officers who recognized the white car as having been stolen earlier in the day in North Hollywood, said Los Angeles Police Department Officer Rosario Herrera.
The chase went to downtown and then to Elysian Park and back to Echo Park and downtown.
The suspect mostly circled the Westlake area, using Alvarado Street and Beverly Boulevard.
The driver drove on the wrong side of the street at times and driving recklessly. He hit at least one car.
The suspect may have been carrying an AK-47, according to Fox 11.
Police told Fox11 they know the identity of the driver, whose brother was shot and killed by Rampart Division officers.
Throughout much of the chase, the suspect was talking on a cellphone.
