• Magnitude-3.5 Earthquake Hits Beverly Hills

BEVERLY HILLS (CNS) – An extremely shallow magnitude-3.5 earthquake centered in Beverly Hills struck just after midnight today, jolting people over a wide area of the Southland, but no damage or injuries were reported.

The temblor — the second this week whose epicenter was in Beverly Hills — struck at 12:03 a.m. at a depth of zero kilometers, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

“We felt a pretty good jolt here,” said Beverly Hills police Lt. Lincoln Hoshino, adding that the department received no immediate reports of injuries or damages.

The quake was felt over a wide swath of the Greater Los Angeles area, with callers reporting being jolted as close to the epicenter as Santa Monica and L.A.’s Westside and as far away as downtown L.A., Hollywood and the San Fernando Valley. Apparently as a result of the quake’s shallowness, callers described experiencing considerably sharper shaking than is normally associated with a 3.5 temblor.

The quake sent the Los Angeles Fire Department into Earthquake Emergency Mode, with firefighters from the department’s 106 stations launching a damage survey on the ground as LAFD helicopter crews did the same from the air, department spokesman Brian Humphrey said.

The objective was to identify “any significant damage to critical infrastructure, including transportation, utilities, hospitals, schools” and large gathering places in the Fire Department’s 470-square mile jurisdiction, he said. The Earthquake Emergency Mode status was called off at 12:46 a.m. after no signs of injuries or damages surfaced.

The Los Angeles County Fire Department also received no reports of injuries or damage, a county fire dispatcher said. The county, the nation’s most populous, covers an area of more than 4,000 square miles and is inhabited by some 10 million people.

Today’s earthquake was the second to strike Beverly Hills in five days. A magnitude-3.2 earthquake struck just before 3:27 a.m. Monday, but seismologists did not immediately say if the two shakers were related.
