COVINA (CNS) – A Homeboys Industries Inc. employee was stabbed to death in a backyard fight Thursday, and a 32-year-old man was behind bars in the slaying today.

Gonzalo Robles died in his backyard in the 3600 block of Shadyglen Drive after the roughly 1:50 p.m. stabbing Thursday, the San Gabriel Valley Tribune reported.

Louis Alberto Villaneda, 32, who also was stabbed was treated at a hospital and booked on suspicion of homicide, the newpaper reported.

A roommate of Robles’, 68-year-old Geoffrey Brooks, said Robles was known as “Magoo” and worked at Homeboy Industries in Los Angeles, the nonprofit started by the Rev. Greg Boyle to place ex-gang members in jobs.

Villaneda had been living in a house on the rear of the property and had been helping Brooks and Robles with house work, according to sheriff’s detectives.

The two men appeared to fighting over not being shown “respect,” Brooks said.

Two area schools were placed on “lockdown,” while deputies sought Villaneda, who fled after the fight, according to Covina police. Villaneda was arrested several hours later at a convenience store, still bleeding from knife wounds, police said.

Villaneda was expected to be arraigned Wednesday in West Covina Superior Court.
