• Man Sentenced to 11 Years for Voluntary Manslaughter in Ex-Girlfriend’s Death

ALHAMBRA (CNS) – A 37-year-old San Gabriel man who killed his ex-
girlfriend and dumped her body in a trash container was sentenced today to 11
    years in prison.
Isaac John Campbell was convicted June 8 of voluntary manslaughter in
the August 2007 death of Liya “Jessie” Lu. She had been reported missing by a
cousin after she failed to return from a visit to Campbell’s home.
    Campbell took Lu’s body — inside a trash container — to a friend’s
home in Arcadia and asked the man to store it for him, authorities said.
The man opened the container in September 2007 after hearing news
reports about Lu’s disappearance. He moved some kitty litter around, noticed an
odor and found the victim’ remains inside a plastic bag in the bin, a sheriff’s
    lieutenant said.
Authorities were unable to determine how Lu died.
A jury in December acquitted Campbell of first-degree murder, but
deadlocked on a second-degree murder charge. A second panel convicted him of
    manslaughter after a retrial.
