• 8th Blecksmith 5K Run Set for July 4 at Tribune

The San Marino Tribune will once again honor the memory of J.P. Blecksmith when hundreds of runners and walkers depart the start-finish line for the 8th annual running (and walking) of The Tribune’s J.P. Blecksmith Leadership Foundation 5K Run and Walk at 8:00 a.m. on Wednesday, July 4, 2012. Blecksmith, a San Marino resident and graduate of Flintridge Prep, attended the United States Naval Academy before accepting a commission to the Marine Corps. He gave his life on Thursday, November 11, 2004 in Fallujah while taking part in Operation Iraqi Freedom II.

J.P. was awarded the Purple Heart and the Bronze Star for bravery.

The run will start at 8:00 a.m. in front of The Tribune’s headquarters at 1441 San Marino Avenue. Runners and walkers will head west on Monterey, north on Old Mill Rd., east on Mill Lane, behind Lacy Park, east to Oxford, north to Orlando, east to San Marino Ave. and south to The Tribune. Last year, more than 600 participants took part in the event.

Proceeds from the annual run and walk benefit the J.P. Blecksmith Leadership Foundation at Flintridge Preparatory School in La Cañada.
The cost of the race is $30 for ages fifteen years and up; $20 for ages 14 and under; $20 for members of the military and $25 for runners currently participating on a high school track or cross country team. Registered race participants will receive an official event t-shirt.

For more information and to register for the event, please go to www.jpblecksmith.org. Pre-registration on the website is available until Saturday, June 30 at 11:59 p.m.
