• JAZZ PROFESSOR THOM DAVID MASON SPEAKS TO TROJAN AFFILIATES OF USC


    Trojan Affiliates of USC, a women’s support located in the San Gabriel Valley invites you to attend their Membership Coffee on Thursday, March 1, 2012 at the San Gabriel Country Club, 350 East Hermosa Drive, San Gabriel. Coffee and refreshments begin at 7:00 p.m. followed by a speaker and brief meeting.

    The meeting will feature Thom David Mason, Professor of Jazz Studies, who founded the department of jazz studies at the USC Thornton School of Music in 1983 and was its chairman from 1983-1996. Currently, he teaches both undergraduate and graduate courses and serves as academic advisor for all jazz studies DMA students.

    Professor Mason has appeared as a soloist at jazz concerts throughout the world and has played with such notables as Sarah Vaughan, Ella Fitzgerald, Tony Bennett, Ernie Watts, and more. He is a saxophone, clarinet, and flute specialist and has recorded four jazz albums under his own name. In 1996 he received the Jazz Educator of the Year Award from the Los Angeles Jazz Society, for his work in promoting jazz education and for his work in the community as executive director of the Jazz Arts Foundation, a non –profit organization that helps talented inner-city youths learn about jazz.Trojan Affiliates of USC provides scholarships for eight USC students residing in the San Gabriel Valley through its sale of USC products. 

    The women also volunteer at the annual Pasadena Showcase House of Design, host various speakers, and have social functions throughout the year to promote camaraderie and spirit amongst friends of USC. The group is composed of alumnae, friends, and parents who have an interest in the University.
