SAN DIEGO (CNS) – Two institutions of higher learning in San Diego were
named today to President Barack Obama’s Community Service Honor Roll With
Distinction.
The president lauded UC San Diego and Cal Western School of Law for
their support of volunteering, civic engagement and service learning.
A total of 15 colleges in California and 114 nationwide were recognized
by Obama.
“Giving back is a tradition of UC San Diego,’ said Penny Rue, the
university’s vice chancellor of student affairs. “Community engagement and
public service are ingrained in the educational experience at our university.’
UCSD was honored for Teams in Engineering Service, in which students
with technical and creative skills help nonprofit organizations; offering a
community service minor at Thurgood Marshall College; and a community service
program called “Alternative Breaks,’ which sponsors international trips to
perform charity work.
