ALHAMBRA (CNS) – A man was sentenced today to 33 years to life in state
prison for fatally stabbing an Alhambra woman in 1983 and taking jewelry that
belonged to her before fleeing to Asia.
Ninh Kim Nguyen, who turned 55 on Sunday, was convicted last fall of the
Aug. 5, 1983, slaying of Khuyen Thi Bi and a grand theft charge involving
jewelry taken from her apartment.
The 38-year-old woman was stabbed nine times, and her son found her with
a knife lodged in the back of her neck, according to Deputy District Attorney
Nguyen, who was charged with her murder a week later, was captured in
Cambodia in 1997 after fleeing Vietnam to avoid capture in a fraud scheme
He was convicted in Vietnam in 1998 and sentenced to prison for 14
years, but the Vietnamese government agreed to return Nguyen to the United
States to stand trial on the murder charge. He was sent back to Los Angeles
County in October 2008.
Nguyen was sentenced by Alhambra Superior Court Judge Laura Priver, who
presided over his trial.
