LOS ANGELES (CNS) – The Los Angeles Dodgers today will play the first of
this season’s six midweek day games at Dodger Stadium, with food and soft
drinks sold for half price.
The half-price food and soft drink promotion, which had not been
previously offered at Dodger Stadium, was created in an attempt to boost
attendance at midweek day games, which draw fewer fans than midweek night games
or weekend games because most of the potential fans are working.
Alcoholic beverages were initially to be included in the promotion, but
were dropped April 13, one day after Los Angeles County Supervisor Mike
Antonovich called for them to be dropped in the wake of the near fatal beating
of San Francisco Giants fan Bryan Stow in a Dodger Stadium parking lot on March
31.
Alcoholic beverages were dropped from the promotion, because “we just
thought it was the right thing to do,’ Dodgers vice president of
communications Josh Rawitch told City News Service.
The Dodgers will wear 1940s-era blue uniforms for all six games during
the promotion. The style was selected in an online vote among six choices,
finishing less than 2,000 votes ahead of the 1911 road uniform with nearly
50,000 votes cast.
This will be the first time the Dodgers have worn a throwback uniform
since June 23, 2007 in Tampa Bay as part of a “Turn Back the Clock Night,’
honoring former Dodger player and Rays coach Don Zimmer. The Dodgers wore
replica 1955 Brooklyn road uniforms that night.
The opponents will also wear “throwback’ uniforms in all six games.
Today’s opponents, the Atlanta Braves, will wear a uniform from the 1940s with
Boston across the front.
Today marks the 121st anniversary of the Dodgers’ first victory, when
the team, known as the Brooklyn Bridegrooms, defeated the Boston Beaneaters,
now the Braves.
