• S.E.E.D.S Gala Splendor at Descanso Oct. 10 Raises $150,000 for Education at Descanso; 300 Attend Black Tie Event


    A cold, rainy week turned gloriously warm for the 10thannual SEEDS fund-raiser Splendor at Descanso on Saturday Oct. 10th on the MainLawn at Descanso Gardens

    More than300 guests enjoyed fabulous food, drink, dancing and conversation under theautumn-tinged Descanso oaks at the evening event. In all, $150,000 was raisedfor Descanso’s educational programs that serve school children, youth anddevelopmentally disabled students.

    SEEDS is an acronym for SupportingEducation and Excellence at Descanso.

    Since itsinception in 2001, SEEDS has raised more than $1.5 million for educationalprograms in the Gardens.

    Thehighlight of the evening was the live auction. Seven items, including vacationtrips, a 3-D HDTV, and two separate dinner packages in Descanso’s historicBoddy House catered by Patina Group, were up for bid.

    As in yearspast, Fritz Coleman, KNBC Channel Four weathercaster, served as SEEDS guestauctioneer.

    “Descansois an oasis. A physical and spiritual escape,” he said. “I have so much respectfor everyone who pours so much love into this lovely place. I’m very honored tobe a part of their yearly event!”

    In the last10 years, more than 150,000 students, many from disadvantaged backgrounds, havetaken part in Descanso Gardens’ educationalprograms.

    “For manyof these children, a trip to Descanso Gardens is their firstand sometimes most important introduction to the natural world,” said David R.Brown, executive director.

    SharonMintie Miller of La Cañada Flintridge served as chairperson of this year’sSEEDS.

    The eventpaid tribute to the past chairs, including Amy Lamb (2001), ElizabethFitzpatrick and Linda O’Callaghan (co-chairs 2002), Lucia Logan (2003), JulieScholler (2004), Lisa S. Cochran (2005), Pam Thyret (2006), Anne Trujillo andMcNally Sagal (co-chairs 2007), Martha Wheeler Bowman (2008), and Faye Therrien(2009).
