ARCADIA – The Recreation and
Community Services Department will be celebrating the end of summer with our
annual carnival on Wednesday, August 11th from 10am – 2pm at Eisenhower Memorial Park
(corner of 2nd and Colorado). This year’s theme is “Board Game, Board Walk”.
Enjoy bingo, board games, raffles and a
Twister Tournament. Carnival games are
available for a nominal fee and offer fun, kid- friendly prizes, so be sure to
bring lots of change. Bring a picnic lunch or purchase a delicious snack
from our Hungry, Hungry Hippo Snack Bar.

The City of Sierra Madre’s Community
Services Commission is looking for three motivated, enthusiastic, creative, and
friendly volunteers to serve on the City’s Parks Master Plan Subcommittee. The
City welcomes any interested residents to apply.
Parks Master Plan Subcommittee – 3
Vacancies for Community Members At Large
The Committee will be comprised of two (2) members
of the Community Services Commission and three (3) community members at large. Community & Personnel Services Department
staff will be the liaisons to the committee.
The committee will be subject to the Brown Act and therefore meet in a
public place with posted agendas.
The committee will be appointed by the Community
Services Commission on August 16, 2010, at the regularly scheduled meeting. The
committee will review, amend and develop the adopted Parks Master Plan
2001. The following specific tasks below have been assigned to the
subcommittee to make recommendations to the Community Services Commission
regarding changes to the Parks Master Plan.
Tasks assigned to the Parks Master Plan
Subcommittee:
1. Review the 2001 Parks Master
Plan and 2005 Scorecard and identify accomplishments as well as needs not yet
met since the last review.
2.
Review
the City’s park inventory by touring all the parks and recreation and school
facilities located in Sierra Madre.
3.
Analyze
the demographic and population characteristics of the community including
evaluating factors of age, income, gender, education, ethnicity, median income
and project projected population changes.
4.
Create
a Standards Analysis – a park classifications and guidelines which apply to the
community of Sierra Madre. Existing facility should be compared against
standards to determine acreage and facilities required to meet present and
future needs of the community.
5.
Community
Input Process – determine the park and recreation needs of the community.
Includes public meetings, focus groups, and surveys. From feedback, quantify
specific needs of the community.
6.
Prioritize
needs and make recommendations for implementation – summarize priorities and
make recommendations toward the acquisition, development and maintenance of
parks, recreation areas and opens spaces for the next five to ten years. Create
an expenditure analysis to help implement the plan.
7.
Implementation
– establish framework and methods for public officials to use in implementing
the master plan. Policies, ordinances or resolutions as well as sources of
funding are recommended so that the plan can become a reality. Also, an action
plan provides specific priorities and budget estimates for the first ten years
of the plan.

Maurer Lifetime Service Award
Presented
to a person/entity that most strongly represents a commitment to serving and
volunteering, which is the true spirit of Sierra Madre.
Wistaria
Award
In
recognition of City/Community partnership, presented to a local business or
organization whose major contributions to the City/Community of Sierra Madre
have demonstrated a true partnership that assists in and provides services,
programs, or enhances the general welfare of the community as a whole.
Police
Chief’s Special Award
Presented
by the Sierra Madre Chief of Police to an individual who has demonstrated
outstanding dedication to duty (employee) or service (community) in resolving a
community law enforcement-related issue.
Public
Safety Award
Presented
by the Mayor to an individual, either an employee or citizen, who took action
to protect and maintain the safety of the community by taking lifesaving
action.
Public
Service Award
Employee
of the Year – presented by the Mayor upon the recommendation of the City
Manager to an extraordinary city employee who has represented remarkable
customer and public service as well as dedication to the citizens of Sierra
Madre over the course of a year.
Community
Youth Service Award
Presented
to a young adult in the community who demonstrates dedication and outstanding
service to the community.
